The God Delusion is sure to garner significant attention in the media and in popular culture.
Dawkins, along with the other fashionable skeptics and atheists of the day, makes for good television and creates an instant media sensation. In one sense, we should be thankful for the forthrightness with which he presents his arguments. This is not a man who minces words, and he never hides behind his own argument. Furthermore, at several points in the book he correctly identifies weaknesses in many of the arguments put forth by theists. As is so often the case, we learn from our intellectual enemies as well as from our allies.
The tone of the book is strident, the content of the book is bracing, and the attitude of the book is condescending. Nevertheless, Dawkins insists that his strident attack upon the faith is limited to words. “I am not going to bomb anybody, behead them, stone them, burn them at the stake, crucify them, or fly planes into their skyscrapers, just because of a theological disagreement,” he insists. He even allows that “we can retain a sentimental loyalty to the cultural and literary traditions” of organized religion, “and even participate in religious rituals such as marriages and funerals,” he asserts. Nevertheless, all this must be done without buying into the supernatural beliefs that historically went along with those traditions.” Further: “We can give up belief in God while n
ot losing touch with a treasured heritage.” All this raises more questions than Dawkins answers. If belief in God is so intellectually abhorrent, why would anyone want to retain the traditions associated with these beliefs? Why does Dawkins acknowledge that all this amounts to “a treasured heritage?” It must be because, in the end, even Richard Dawkins is not as much of an atheist as he believes himself to be. If Dawkins is so certain that theism is dead, why would he devote so much of his time and energy to opposing it? A man who is genuinely certain that Christianity is passing away would feel no need to write a 400-page book in order to urge its passing.
Dawkins can deny anything, everything, now, always, sometimes…..who really cares? Doesn’t stop the world from spinning. Doesn’t knock the sun out of the sky. Doesn’t make a stalk of corn have more or less ears. Doesn’t make trees grow upside down. Doesn’t make a rabbit stand on his ears. Doesn’t make cats bark. Doesn’t make it snow at 90 degrees. Well, I guess you get it. Dawkin is just another sound in a universe with so much sound…little of it is even heard. At least he’s busy.
Dawkins is clueless. But maybe the Spirit can clue him in.
Or he may find the opportunity to pay attention to the Word in some crisis of his life in the future…you never know.
The larger Westminster catechism Q&A #2 tells us how it is evident that there is a God:
“The very light of nature in man, and the works of God, declare plainly that there is a God; but his word and Spirit ONLY do sufficiently and effectually reveal him unto men for their salvation.”
This is futher illustrated by:
Romans 1:19
Because that which may be known of God is manifest IN THEM: for God hath shown it unto them.
v.20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are CLEARLY SEEN, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; SO THAT THEY ARE WITHOUT EXCUSE.
PS. 19:1
The HEAVENS declare the glory of God; and the firmament showth his hand-work.
v. 2 Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night showeth knowledge.
v. 3 There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard.
Acts 17:28
For IN HIM we LIVE AND MOVE AND HAVE OUR BEING.
I Cor. 2:9 But, as it is written, EYE HATH NOT SEEN NOR EAR HEARD, NEITHER HAVE ENTERED INTO THE HEART OF MAN, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
v. 10 But God hath REVEALED THEM UNTO US BY HIS SPIRIT: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
II Tim 3:15
Ant that from a child thou hast known THE HOLY SCRIPTURES, which are ABILE TO MAKE THEE WISE UNTO SALVATION THROUGH FAITH which is in Christ Jesus.
v. 16 ALL SCRIPTURE is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness;
v. 17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
Isaiah 59:21
As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the Lord; MY SPIRIT that is upon thee, AND MY WORDS which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed’s seed, saith the Lord, from henceforth and forever.
Forgive me for such a long comment, but it is remarkable that GOD’S SPIRIT has revealed Christ to many in Arab nations and in India where the WORD is not available and people are being saved, showing up at a Christian church asking for Bibles (rare…can’t print enough for the demand) and what to do next.
Also, the WORD never returns void.
It was my dream to blanket India with tiny play-alongs with the whole NIV in various languages. They have tiny earphones and run forever on a triple A battery. Alas, it turned out that I will just have to PRAY that they hear instead of causing it to happen. But according to Ephesians, my God is dynamite and working with the same energy that he raised Christ from the dead to call men to redemption and then perfect them until the Church is glorious without spot or wrinkle at his coming.
Incidentally, I do believe the nations that surround Israel WILL turn to Christ through ordinary evangelism and be blessed so much of God that Israel will be jealous and also turn to Christ. No secret rapture needed. When all the “wild olive branches” have been grafted onto the True Vine, and the “fullness of the gentiles” has come in, then God will graft the original broken-off branches back on. And then He shall return. Amazing….how the Word tells the future fate of Israel…and the nations surrounding it are Arab and Asian…not American.
